Privacy Policy

1. What SafeNSound Is

SafeNSound is a public safety intelligence platform that displays aggregated, publicly available data on an interactive map. We do not generate original crime data โ€” we organize and visualize data that is already public record, including FBI NIBRS crime statistics, public sex offender registries, U.S. Census data, NOAA storm data, EPA Toxic Release Inventory, and FEMA flood maps.

2. Data We Collect

Address searches

When you enter an address, it is sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim geocoding service to convert it to coordinates. We do not store your searched addresses. Nominatim's own privacy policy applies to that request.

Location (optional)

The map may request your device location to center the view. This is processed entirely in your browser and is never transmitted to our servers.

Anonymous usage analytics

We may collect standard server-side analytics (page views, error rates) through Vercel. No personal identifiers are attached to these events.

3. Data We Do Not Collect

  • โœ“We do not create user accounts or store personal profiles.
  • โœ“We do not track you across sessions or devices.
  • โœ“We do not sell, rent, or share any data with third parties for advertising.
  • โœ“We do not store your search history on our servers.
  • โœ“We do not collect payment information.

4. Public Data Sources

All safety scores are derived from publicly available government datasets. We do not generate, fabricate, or editorialize the underlying data. Sources include:

FBI National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) 2023
Public State Sex Offender Registries
U.S. Census Bureau โ€” American Community Survey
NOAA Storm Events Database 2019โ€“2024
FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer
EPA Toxic Release Inventory
NCES National School Database
OpenStreetMap (parks, points of interest)

5. Data Accuracy & Limitations

Safety scores are statistical summaries intended for general awareness only. They are not a guarantee of safety or danger in any specific location. Known limitations include:

  • !Florida underreporting: Florida does not fully participate in FBI NIBRS reporting, which may cause safety scores in Florida to appear artificially favorable.
  • !Crime data is aggregated at the county or state level and interpolated to H3 hexagons. It does not reflect block-level or street-level precision.
  • !Data reflects historical records and may not capture recent events. Always use official local law enforcement resources for current safety information.

6. Third-Party Services

Vercel

Hosts the application. May collect server logs and performance metrics.
